Sea Days

One of the most common questions first-time cruisers ask is:

“What exactly is a sea day?”

A sea day is a day during your cruise when the ship is sailing between destinations instead of stopping at a port. Unlike port days where passengers leave the ship to explore a city or excursion, sea days are designed for relaxing onboard and enjoying everything the cruise ship has to offer.

For many cruisers, sea days become some of the most enjoyable and memorable parts of the entire vacation. Since there is no rush to leave the ship, sea days provide an opportunity to slow down, explore the ship, and fully enjoy the cruise experience itself.

Cruise ships typically schedule a wide variety of activities on sea days because more passengers remain onboard throughout the day. Depending on the ship, activities may include trivia games, poolside entertainment, live music, production shows, cooking demonstrations, fitness classes, shopping events, bingo, movies, and much more. Sea days often have the fullest activity schedules of the entire cruise.

Many travelers also use sea days to relax and recharge. Some passengers spend the day lounging by the pool, reading on their balcony, visiting the spa, enjoying specialty dining, or simply watching the ocean pass by.

Sea days can be as active or as relaxing as you want them to be.

It is important for first-time cruisers to understand that sea days can also feel busier than port days in certain areas of the ship. Pool decks, buffets, and popular activities may become crowded since most passengers are onboard at the same time. Planning meals, activities, or relaxation time strategically can help make sea days even more enjoyable.

Weather and ocean conditions can also affect sea days. Occasionally the ship may experience rougher seas depending on the route and weather patterns. Many experienced cruisers recommend packing motion sickness remedies just in case, especially for travelers who are unsure how they will react to being at sea.

For many people, sea days are what truly separate cruising from other types of vacations. They create time to disconnect from busy schedules, enjoy the ship itself, and experience the relaxing feeling of being surrounded by the open ocean.
