Cruising: Our Favorite Way to Travel & Explore the World

Cruising is one of our favorite ways to travel, and it’s easy to see why. There’s something special about unpacking once, settling into your stateroom, and waking up in a new destination each day. Many people describe cruising as a “floating hotel,” and we agree—it combines the comfort of a resort with the excitement of exploring multiple places in one trip.

From incredible food and nonstop entertainment to ocean views and easy travel days, cruising offers a unique balance of relaxation and adventure. Whether you’re brand new to cruising or a seasoned traveler planning your next voyage, this page is your starting point for everything we’ve learned along the way.

Why We Love Cruising

One of the biggest advantages of cruising is simplicity. Transportation, accommodations, dining, and entertainment are bundled into one experience, which makes planning far less stressful than many other types of travel.

We also love the variety cruising offers. You can enjoy a quiet morning on your balcony, spend the afternoon exploring a port, and end the day with a show, live music, or a relaxed dinner—all without ever repacking your bags.

Cruising works well for:

  • Travelers who want to see multiple destinations in one trip
  • First-time travelers who prefer structured planning
  • Couples, families, and multigenerational groups
  • Short weekend getaways or longer vacations

Our Cruising Style & Experience

Over time, we’ve learned what works best for us and how to plan cruises that fit our travel style. We enjoy cruising at a comfortable pace, balancing onboard activities with time to relax and explore ports independently when possible.

We focus on sharing honest, firsthand experiences, including what we love, what we skip, and what we’ve learned after sailing multiple itineraries. Our goal is to help you plan with confidence—especially if you’re cruising for the first time or trying a new ship or port.

Loyal to Royal Caribbean

We are proudly loyal to Royal Caribbean, and much of our cruise content is centered around their ships and itineraries. Over the years, we’ve found Royal Caribbean to offer a consistent experience, modern ships, strong entertainment, and itineraries that fit our travel preferences—especially on the West Coast.

That said, we always aim to share balanced insights. No cruise line is perfect for everyone, and part of planning a great cruise is understanding what fits your expectations.

Cruise Planning Tips & Resources

Planning ahead can make a big difference in your cruise experience. Over time, we’ve created resources to help make cruise planning easier and more enjoyable.

Popular topics we cover include:

  • First-time cruiser tips
  • Cruise packing guides
  • Embarkation and debarkation day advice
  • Choosing shore excursions

These guides are based on real experiences and are designed to help you avoid common mistakes while maximizing your time onboard and in port.

Shore Excursions & Port Days

Port days are one of the highlights of cruising. We often choose to explore independently, especially in ports that are walkable or easy to navigate. Other times, booking an excursion makes sense depending on timing, distance, or personal preference.

We share insights on:

  • When to book ship excursions
  • When independent exploration works well
  • Planning port days on your own
  • What to prioritize with limited time

Our goal is to help you feel comfortable making the choice that works best for your cruise.

Start Exploring Our Cruise Content

If you’re planning a cruise or just starting to research, these resources are a great place to begin:

Cruising continues to be one of our favorite ways to travel, and we love sharing what we’ve learned along the way. Whether you’re loyal to Royal Caribbean like we are, exploring different cruise lines, or planning your very first sailing, we hope our experiences help make your journey smoother and more enjoyable.

Welcome aboard—and happy cruising! 🚢✨

Cruise Tips & Tricks: What Has Worked for Us

Over time, we’ve learned that small decisions can make a big difference in how smooth and enjoyable a cruise feels. From planning before you leave home to making the most of embarkation day and onboard activities, these are the tips and habits that have consistently worked well for us.

Everything shared here is based on firsthand experience and repeated sailings. Whether you’re preparing for your first cruise or looking to fine-tune your routine, these tips can help you start your vacation relaxed and confident.

Before the Cruise

Watching Port Streams Before We Go

As our cruise date gets closer, one of our favorite pre-trip rituals is watching live port cameras. Seeing ships arrive and depart builds excitement and gives a real-time sense of what the port looks like. We often watch BLC streams on YouTube and EarthCam to get familiar with the area and start visualizing our upcoming trip.

Travel Insurance

The more we travel, the more we appreciate the peace of mind that travel insurance provides. It helps cover unexpected situations like delays, medical needs, or last-minute changes. With so many coverage options available, taking time to choose the right plan has become a standard part of our cruise planning process.

Pre-Purchasing Packages

Whenever possible, we purchase onboard packages before boarding. This might include drinks, dining, internet, photos, or excursions. Pricing is usually lower ahead of time, and having everything handled in advance makes embarkation day feel much more relaxed.

Stateroom Preview

YouTube has become one of our most helpful planning tools. Many cruisers share detailed stateroom walkthroughs, and it’s often possible to find videos of your exact cabin or a similar layout. These previews help us understand storage space, bathroom size, and overall layout so we know exactly what to expect—and how to pack.

Arriving a Day Early

We almost always arrive at the departure city a day early. Staying near the port allows us to settle in, enjoy a nice dinner, and avoid the stress of travel delays on embarkation morning. Starting the cruise well-rested sets the tone for the entire trip.

Embarkation Day Tips

Complete the Safety Briefing Early

The safety briefing is a quick but important step at the beginning of every cruise. Completing it early helps us feel prepared and allows us to fully enjoy sailaway without distractions. If it isn’t completed digitally beforehand, the crew will guide you through it in person.

Muster Station First

We like to head to our muster station shortly after boarding. Getting this done early means one less thing to think about later—and we never want to be the ones holding things up when the ship is ready to depart.

Waiting for the Room to Open

Staterooms aren’t ready immediately on embarkation day, but we see that as an opportunity rather than an inconvenience. This is a great time to grab lunch, explore the ship, or relax by the pool. On Royal Caribbean, rooms are typically available around 1:00 PM ship time, and the wait ensures a clean, ready space when you arrive.

Onboard Tips That Make a Difference

Using the Daily Planner in the App

The cruise line app is one of our favorite onboard tools. Each day, we review the schedule and add the activities we want to attend—trivia, shows, live music, and more. The app keeps everything organized in one place and sends reminders so we don’t miss anything.

Casino Rewards

We enjoy spending some time in the casino, and many cruise lines offer reward programs that can add extra value. These programs can unlock perks over time, making casino visits both entertaining and potentially rewarding.

Laundry Service

Using the onboard laundry service allows us to pack lighter and stay comfortable throughout the cruise. It’s especially helpful on longer sailings and makes returning home with clean clothes a nice bonus.

Cruising is meant to be enjoyable, not stressful. These tips have helped us simplify planning, avoid common frustrations, and focus more on enjoying the experience. Not every tip will fit every traveler, but having a routine that works for you can make all the difference.

If you’re just getting started, or even if you’ve cruised before, we hope these insights help you feel more prepared and excited for your next adventure at sea.
